The Futurist by Cynthia G. Wagner

July-August 2007

A clearly written overview of business-relevant trends in the major sectors of futures analysis . . . and guides the reader through the potential impacts and - more valuably - inspirations for new ways to turn a profit. . . . Hiemstra’s book is both practical and visionary, business oriented and personal.

I have to to admit it was the title that first attracted me to this book.  In my work as a consulting futurist, I am constantly looking to find ways in which we can turn our knowledge of the future into revenue.  On reading the book I found this to be a view that did not do justice to the breadth of the book.  It is a book that is designed to help the lay reader to engage with the future.  In doing so, we can adopt a future perspective within our lives, both at work and at liesure.  (continue to 2-page review, pdf)

This is a GREAT book! While Part One is both interesting and helpful, Part Two is fantastic and totally relevant for all of us. The detailed explanation of a three-stage process for preferred future planning is absolutely worth the price of the book! There is a diagram in chapter 5 that will definitely become a permanent fixture in my white board planning exercises. Anyone leading an organization into the future will benefit from the ideas here. Turning the Future Into Revenue will help you learn to develop foresight, choose a future direction, and then decide on strategy. Fantastic!

I read Turning the Future into Revenue last week and used some of the information to enhance a strategy meeting I facilitated. I love the book and think all leaders ought to get one. I found Part II, How to Predict the Future of Your Business or Career - And Plan for it Now, to be particularly helpful.

I highlighted the heck out of it - Glen goes beyond mentioning the trends to helping readers shape their future. I like Glen’s distinction of a vision versus mission versus plan and I like the examples and structure he offers to help us create and move toward our preferred future.

The final section is a great call to action.

Hiemstra was approached by publisher John Wiley and Sons, Inc. to do the book…How China will outpace our country; how to survive without oil; how to profit from a shrinking customer base — these are just some of the tough topics Hiemstra tackes. He looks at strategic planning as an oxymoron and says strategizing or futuring goes much futher than planning…The book made me squrim at times, but anxious to learn more. If you want to know the value of thinking two decades ahead, while planning in the present, this is a must read.
